We returned to our earlier Stoke Newington Townhouse to assist the clients in creating an additional bedroom. The client’s mother wanted to move closer to the family and the additional room would allow her to live with them. By replacing the existing butterfly roof with a new lead-clad mansard we were able to create not only a new bedroom space but also a spacious ensuite.
A requirement of the planning consent was that the new windows on the front elevation would be concealed behind the existing parapet wall. We therefore pulled back the front of the extension from the main facade of the house. The resulting space creates a secret roof terrace for the clients, who will be using the new rooms as a master suite. Materials were chosen to reflect the original extension at ground floor, including timber cladding stained to a warm sunset colour that complements the midnight blue interiors.
